How to avoid static build up on carpets?

I've just gone through a medical procedure that means I need to avoid static build up. unfortunately the carpet in my office is a nightmare for this. What are the best ways of dealing with it? I know I can get shoes (they're hideous but I'll wear them) but what about static from other people?
