How difficult is it to replace the fuel filter on a lawn mower engine? and why would need to replace it?

My guess is that the gasoline is like you stated, (tarnished) or just old. There may not be a need to replace the filter. Just try putting fresh fuel into the tank. That would be a good place to start. If that doesn't help, then replacing the filter should be a simple task. I'm not entirely familiar with all models of mowers, but on most I've seen, the filter is the small plastic dick that's on the fuel line. The fuel line is a hose that comes directly out the fuel tank, and straight to the carburetor. somewhere on the line, mid-way approx. there you should see the small white or clear plastic filter. It's about the size of a 50 cent piece. Possibly larger. Dis-assembly may only require a quarter inch socket, or a flat head screw driver. Just be sure to elevate, or pug off the lines once you take them apart to ensure that no fuel is wasted. Hope this helped!!!
