Was Jesus on the Cross merely the object upon whom a holy and angry God poured out His righteous?

Any god who requires the torture death of his son in order to be propitiated is a violent tribal deity. So I would hope the latter is the case, assuming Jesus existed, which he did not, but it is fun to speculate about such things.
